چکیده

background periapical lesions are induced in response to injuries to periapical tissues, which are generally the result of infections within the root canal. mast cells actively participate to the inflammatory infiltration of periapical granulomas and cysts. objectives the aim of this study was to detect and compare the presence of mast cells in inflammatory periapical lesions, including cysts and granulomas. materials and methods in this cross-sectional study, 26 samples of inflammatory periapical lesions (17 cysts and nine granulomas) were stained with an immunohistochemical technique using cd117 (c-kit) antibody to detect mast cells. then, mast cell count (the number of mast cells in 0.2 mm2) and the intensity of mast cell staining were determined by two board certified pathologists. fisher exact test and t-test were used for statistical analysis, with p < 0.05 for statistical significance. conclusions according to the results of this study, it appears that mast cells are present in all the investigated inflammatory periapical lesions and might play a role in the pathogenesis of these lesions. results although mast cells were observed in all samples, there were more numerous in periapical granulomas compared to periapical cysts, with no statistically significant difference (p = 0.076). the results also demonstrated that the staining in periapical cysts and granulomas were of strong and moderate intensity, respectively, without any significant difference (p = 0.411).

Periapical central giant cell granuloma misdiagnosed as odontogenic cyst.

AIM To present the clinicopathological features of a series of four periapically located central giant cell granulomas (CGCGs) that were misdiagnosed and treated as being of endodontic origin. SUMMARY Four cases of periapical CGCGs were submitted with a clinical diagnosis of either radicular or residual cyst. In two cases, root canal treatment had been performed previously. The patients were ...

Immunohistochemical Expression of PCNA and Ki-67 in Periapical Granuloma and Radicular Cyst

Objectives: Periapical Granulomas (PGs) and Radicular Cysts (RCs), as the most common odontogenic lesions have yet unclear pathogenesis. This study was aimed to compare PCNA and Ki-67 expression in PGs and RCs and evaluate their possible relationship with two lesions. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, twenty PGs and twenty RCs were evaluated immunohistochemically using an a...

Presence of Leptin in chronic periapical lesions

Introduction: Studies have shown the regulatory role of Leptin in bone formation, its expression in adipose tissue as well as increased levels in circulation following the adminstration of inflammatory stimuli such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS). However, there is little data evaluating the role of Leptin in inflammatory periapical lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence and c...

Rate and comparison of periapical inflammatory lesions using clinical diagnosis and histopathological findings during the 18-year study period

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Inflammatory Periapical lesions are the most common periapical lesions. These lesions are often diagnosed based on clinical and radiological examination, which may be different from the histological finding. The present study was carried out with aim to assess the rate and to compare clinical and radiographic features with histological diagnosis of periapical pathology.METHO...

Comparison of Mast Cells and Inflammatory Cells within Periapical Lesions and Comparison of Degranulated Mast Cells Between Fibrous and Inflamed Area in Radicular Cysts: An Immunohistochemical Study.

OBJECTIVE The role of mast cells as the key effector of allergic inflammation, anaphylactic inflammatory reactions and in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation, is well-known. The present study is adopted to compare mast cells and inflammatory cells within periapical granuloma and cysts and localize the mast cells and quantify their number in the periapical cysts so as to propose a role of m...
